5 Critical Tools for Health Administrators Today
The health and medical field is getting more and more complicated by the day, with technology shifting, changing and constantly growing into bigger and better things, it’s not too hard to easily get caught up in the ever changing environment. Health administrators have it tough, as their whole job is constantly surrounding the technology that they have to use. Luckily, they’re being provided tech tools that are helping these changing regulations and the overall workspace of administrators. Lowering costs and increasing the overall effectiveness that the practitioners and administrators need so badly. Overall, here are the five health care tools that are changing the health care game for the long run.
The internet and the electronic way of communicating have taken over the way that we communicate as a whole. When things were once told via letters and snail mail, it’s now sent and received in a matter of minutes thanks to things like emails, text messaging and phone calls. With that being said, prescriptions are now changing in such a way as well. E-Prescriptions are completely taking handwriting out of the equation when it comes to prescribing patients with their medicine. One of the best benefits that will come out of this is the lack of errors of said prescriptions due to the handwriting of doctors. Many patients would end up picking the wrong medication and have lots of damage done to them simply because the pharmacy couldn’t read the writing. A Cornell Medical study has said that prescription errors have dropped to 6.6 per one hundred from a 42.5 per 100.
E-prescriptions are also usually integrated with all the other electronic health records and aspects of the business, which keeps everything connected and flowing easily. Patient complaints (and there were a lot!) have also dropped 50 percent as well thanks to the electronic prescribing of their prescriptions.
Interactive Personal Health Records
Families with a large number of members or ones that have a large slew of medical issues are going to require lots of doctor’s visits, prescriptions and ultimately have lots of paper and paperwork that they need to keep track of. This easily becomes overwhelming as you’re unsure of what papers to keep throw out and hang on the fridge as a reminder. Interactive personal health records is something that helps with all of those issues and aims to make the lives of these patients easier and make their paper work and files more accessible and less of a hassle to get their hands on.
This means that the patient and the patient’s providers have the ability to access the HER data at any time. Simply opening a web browser will allow the patient to access the data from any place at any time—making these records more available than any time before. Immunization records, appointment dates, lab results are all just examples of the type of your information that you’ll be able to find in the PHR (personal health records). You’ll also be able to enter information into their record and the edited data will be forwarded to your physician.
Electronic Health Records
Electronic health records (EHR) are the digitizing of patient records and other types of information. Digitizing patient data was a huge step in the medical field as it meant transferring all the information that was once on pieces of paper to the computer. Instead of digging through folders upon folders by hand, clicking in and out of folders on your computer suddenly seemed a lot easier. This also allows patients to get a quick history of themselves, the ability to get medical diagnoses, treatment plans, conditions and test results all in a safe and quick manner.
Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE)
Computerized physician order entry (CPOE) has been a claim to the success in the improvement of health care delivery. While it helps in all settings, the hospital is the one place that has noticed the most improvement and help thanks to the CPOE. CPOE allows the physicians to enter any medical orders and the instructions required or related to the treatment directly into certain systems. This saves time, money and allows the departments to be more organized and thorough with their work. Sharing information has also become a lot quicker and easier between physicians and different departments as well.
This is a broader topic that covers things such as innovations, applications, video and audio links and even patient monitoring. Telehealth technology that’s done right can improve the budgets as well as the quality of care that’s provided to the patients. But making sure that they’re integrated and used correctly can cause rather large dents into budgets. Many patients also claim to see real people rather than videos or audio clips. But if the telehealth technology is done and used correctly, it can be extremely beneficial both to the work place and to the patients as well.
